Rewrite the story for everyone living with and at risk of diabetes
New data shows a rise in cases of type 2 diabetes in the under 40s across the UK. While type 2 diabetes has historically been associated with older age, it is now rising at a quicker rate among the under 40s than in those over 40. Our analysis suggests that the number of people in the UK aged between 18 and 39 living with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes could hit 200,000 by 2027. Developing type 2 diabetes at a younger age is associated with worse health outcomes, including a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.
Research conducted by Diabetes UK showed that almost two-thirds of people (65%) either don’t know or aren’t sure what all the symptoms of type 2 diabetes are, raising fears cases could go undiagnosed.
Know the symptoms:
- Toilet - going for a wee a lot, especially at night.
- Thirsty - being really thirsty.
- Tired - feeling more tired than usual.
- Thinner - losing weight without trying to.
- Genital itching or thrush.
- Cuts and wounds take longer to heal.
- Blurred eyesight.
- Increased hunger.
The free Diabetes UK ‘Know your Risk’ test is available to all (above the age of 18) and will help quickly identify any risk factors of type 2 diabetes. This can be useful to signpost people to.
