Information concerning numerous changes made to CPPE training requirements and resources

1. Declaration of Competence (DoC)

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a decision was taken earlier in the year to delay the renewal requirements for Declaration of Competence (DoC) statements.

The usual process resumed from 1 October 2020. So anyone with an expired DoC statement for a locally commissioned service will need to review their declaration and sign their statement of declaration.

Learners can choose to receive email reminders every six months with the expiry dates of their DoC statements. To select this option they should log in to the CPPE website, go to the 'Declaration of Competence' section and set the email reminders button to ‘On’ using the sliding toggle.

2. New website pages available

There are new pages in the 'Providing pharmacy services' pathway on the website, as well as an update to the 'Pharmacy Quality Scheme (PQS)' page.

i. Community Pharmacy Hepatitis C Antibody Testing Service

- this page has been developed to support the delivery of a new community pharmacy advanced service: The Hepatitis C Testing Service. The aim of the service is to increase levels of testing for hepatitis C virus among people who inject drugs. The page links to the service specification, hosts the mandatory training video for hepatitis C antibody testing in community pharmacy, and links to further learning resources.

ii. NHS Smoking Cessation Service Pilot: Transfer of Care to Community Pharmacy from Secondary Care

- this page has been developed to inform pharmacies that are formally registered to be part of the Smoking Cessation Transfer of Care (SCTC) pilot of the required training in order to deliver this service. It links to different elements of the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training (NCSCT) training. Registered pharmacy professionals are advised to access the training via our website and non-registered pharmacy staff are signposted to the NCSCT site directly. This is clearly described on this page to help people to access the training that is right for them.

iii. NHS Community Pharmacy Hypertension Case - Finding Pilot

- this page has been developed to support pharmacy contractors to deliver a new pilot community pharmacy hypertension case-finding service. It links to both CPPE and external learning resources and this is broken down into the key resources that they should access, more general resources about hypertension and vascular risk, and also resources that support behaviour change interventions.

iv. Pharmacy Quality Scheme (PQS)

- now that the Pharmacy Quality Scheme for 2020/21 part 2 has been agreed, CPPE have updated the PQS page accordingly.

The scheme links to three CPPE programmes, two of which were included previously:

  • 'Risk management' guide and assessment
  • 'Sepsis' short e-learnings and assessment

and one which is new:

  • 'Weight management for adults: understanding the management of obesity' e-learning and assessment

This time there are multiple programmes linked to several of the criteria, so CPPE have streamlined the page to focus on how to complete the CPPE training as outlined in the scheme. CPPE have updated the tracker so that learners can clearly see which CPPE programmes they have successfully completed.

There has been a timeframe added to the 'Risk management' guide and assessment and the tracking system now reflects this.

To avoid duplication CPPE have signposted users to the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee’s (PSNC) 'Pharmacy Quality Scheme' website page. Here they have outlined all of the training requirements for each domain and criterion.

3. 'Remote consultation skills' e-learning programme

This programme was developed in collaboration with the Specialist Pharmacy Service (SPS).

The programme aims to support people to apply their existing consultation skills when undertaking consultations via video and over the phone. It is a Level 2 programme as the principles that underpin good consultations skills are included in existing programmes and includes several examples of remote consultations; complete with debriefs, so that learners can see how the theory works in practice.

4. The 'Patient safety toolkit' e-learning and 'Patient safety toolkit (2020)' e-assessment

This programme was developed in collaboration with the Greater Manchester Patient Safety Transitional Research Centre (GM PSTRC) who are funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and based at the University of Manchester. CPPE have worked with members of the GM PSTRC in the past and they were the team who supported CPPE to update their key patient safety resource: 'Risk management' guide.
